I read an article once that compared online dating to shopping on Amazon Prime. The author supported this comparison by describing how we filter, rank, and compare our matches, ultimately commodifying our potential dates. I found it extremely difficult to disagree with the author, mostly because he was describing exactly how I approached online dating. To be honest, the online dating process has always left me exhausted. Searching through hundreds of profiles filled with seemly unrealistic expectations, platitudes, and bullshit clichés lacking substance, like “living live to the fullest”. How is someone supposed to derive a meaningful message from a profile that describes themselves as “appreciating every day of this journey called life”. I’m not criticizing anyone for writing these types of things. The questions we’re asked inherently illicit such a response because they are self-focused with limited protentional for a response that doesn’t make us sound self-center.
