Sahara crossings to the Indian Ocean a full life
I’m originally from Australia and, through a lifetime of African travel, now a proud dual citizen of Australia and Kenya. I’ve made my home on the Kenyan coast, where life has found a wonderful balance — warm ocean, open skies, fresh food and a relaxed rhythm that still leaves room for adventure. Although I live in a peaceful natural setting, my life has been deeply international. I spent many years managing the Africa programme for the world’s largest adventure travel company, leading journeys across the continent, including numerous expeditions into the Mountains of the Moon in Congo to visit the endangered mountain gorillas. Before that, throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s, I made the overland journey from London to Kenya many times across the Sahara and was among the first to run these expeditions on a commercial truck-based basis. During the 1980s I also made documentary films for Channel 7 in Sydney. Those years shaped my love of different cultures and my ability to feel at home almost anywhere. My time between journeys was often spent spearfishing off the coasts of Cameroon and Kenya. My last partner of 32 years was Sabine, a German and a well-known windsurfing champion. I lost her to leukaemia two years ago and, after taking the time to grieve and rebuild, I now feel ready for a new and meaningful chapter in life. Today I live on a beautiful 25-acre private coastal property on Tiwi Beach, just south of Mombasa. Instead of domestic animals, the land is shared with indigenous wildlife — troops of monkeys, bush babies in the evenings, monitor lizards and an extraordinary variety of birds. The tame squirrels that will take food from your hand are there thanks to my late partner, who ran our own squirrel hospital here — the only one of its kind in East Africa — and they remain a very charming part of daily life. Here I’ve created a small and very personal hospitality project: three luxury villas and a private honeymoon tent set in a spectacular beachfront and forest setting. It’s something I’ve built with care and creativity, and it reflects my love of design, comfort and the coastal lifestyle. I would describe myself as grounded, independent and young in spirit. I enjoy life’s real pleasures: being by the sea, cooking and sharing good food and a bottle of wine at sunset, and laughing often. I keep active and centred with regular Tai Chi and value a healthy way of living. I’m just as happy with quiet companionship as I am heading off on a spontaneous trip — even if it’s simply across the border into Tanzania. My life on the coast and the projects I’ve created here have been featured in a few publications, which I’m always happy to share later if you’re curious. I also have a few new ideas and projects still waiting ahead. I’m at a stage where depth, ease and mutual respect matter far more than rushing. A genuine connection, warmth, humour and emotional maturity are what I value most. I understand that getting to know someone who lives in another country is a big step, so if we felt a natural connection I would be very happy to offer you the opportunity to spend a week here in your own private accommodation — simply to experience the lifestyle and see how it feels, entirely at your own pace. If it makes things more comfortable, you would be very welcome to bring a friend or family member along. It should feel relaxed and pressure-free for both of us.
